Since my husband and I already had three children, I was really nervous about how to pay for all of the household supplies and food that we would need to raise such a large family. However, after carefully considering our options, we decided that we could learn how to be smarter consumers, which might save a little money. We started shopping around for better deals, and we were able to learn how to cut our spending by almost half. This blog is dedicated to helping people to shop a little smarter and to avoid the pitfalls of overspending.

Candles As An Effective Light Source

You may save your candles to create atmosphere during romantic dinners or celebrations. When the lights go out, you probably dig through your junk drawer to find the flashlights. If you do not have a flashlight ready to go or simply can't find one, you can safely use your candles to light your home enough to make the wait for power bearable and even enjoyable.

Candle holders

Fear of starting a fire may be your biggest reason for not using candles as a light source. Although candles must be handled with care, you, like your ancestors, can safely use candles. Make certain that you have non-flammable holders ready to go. Items like special hanging candle lanterns for sale can be particularly helpful. You can also plan ahead for when you use pillar candles or other types that do not use a holder. Search for the best non-flammable surfaces available in your home before you have a power outage. That way you can quickly place your lighted candles in safe areas.

Enhanced Light

Getting the most light out of your candles is simple. You can invest in candleholders that have glass at their base to better reflect light. If you do not have this type, you can simply place the candle in a drinking glass to enhance its lighting power.  A mirror also helps your cause. You can place your candles in front of a mirror to take advantage of the reflected light it offers. Strategically placing your candles during a blackout will shine a much brighter light in your home. Remember that candles with multiple wicks give off more light than other candles. Several of this type should  give you as much light as would six traditional candles.

Candle Tips

Candles need an adequate amount of oxygen to burn correctly, so do not use large candles in a small space. Also, avoid placing your candles in a draft. A breeze will make your candles flicker and sputter, lessening their light and causing them to give off smoke. Stop burning your candles when they burn down to ½ inch to avoid the possibility of their smoking and possibly causing a fire.

Candles may seem like an ineffective way to light your home, but when used correctly, they can give you adequate light during a blackout. You won't have to huddle on the sofa until the electricity comes back on. You should be able to see well enough to function and take care of basic tasks. When using candles, take steps to be safe and enhance the light they give.
